General Information

Kattappana town is situated in the high altitude region of the Idukki district of Kerala, India. It is the largest town in the Highrange and houses most of the educational institutions and hospitals. Kattappana is known as the "commercial capital of highrange" in Kerala, as the area is one of the primary producers of pepper. The mid-1980s saw an unprecedented boom in construction activity as a result of a surge in the price of pepper. The economic boom of the town led to land prices that were once rumoured to be higher than those in Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala, and that still remain high.

The nearest airport is at Nedumbassery (130 km away) near Cochin. The town has no rail connectivity. The nearest railway station is at Kottayam (104 km away). People rely mainly on bus routes which run through the town. There are three State Highways that passes through the town.

Kattappana itself is a commercial town, not a centre for tourism, but there are many tourist spots in the surrounding countryside. There are two hills near the town from which it is possible to get a birds eye view of the town and experience the cool climate at 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) above sea level. The famous Tourism centres such as Thekkady, Vagamon, Ramakkalmedu, Parunthumpara, Panchalimedu,Anchuruly and Kalvarymount falls within this Sub Division.
